Dingy does Cow Bayou
<<<<---back
to the ship's log
.
From the
information I have gathered, she begins in the flatlands around
Mauriceville with her mouth empting into the Intracoastal
Waterways above Lake Sabine. Not exactly a long body nor does
she carry a large amount of water, the Corps of Engineers in
1948-49 straightened it out for barge traffic all the way up to
Orangefield. Because there was not enough oil to transport, it
was never used for that purpose, I’m talking about Cow
Bayou in Southeast Texas. A pretty sight she is winding
down the countryside. Well, I’m sure that’s true, but not having
actually sailed her… well, I was gonna… AAAARRRRGH, I had brave
intentions of doing so, all I had to do was back the dinghy up
to the boat ramp, splash into the water, and go off and running
Cow Bayou, easy up.
Flash memories of the last time I tried to take the Cruise
Ship Dingy out of the water at this very ramp came to
mind. That’s when I was attacked by an alligator, and also the
truth is I can’t back the dinghy’s trailer so goooder. You can
read about that adventure “Admiral Dingy hanging in a tree” on
the web at AdmiralDingy.com. AAAARRRRGH, and then
I did what any good sailor with bell-bottom pants would do:
parked the dinghy’s tender and the dinghy along the side of the
road and ventured into Toup’s Marina and without
hesitation ordered grog, rum to be precise. Yes, give me rum
and don’t let me go out there and break something like I did the
last time I had a Dumb Dingy moment. Well, I’m partaking of my
rum ration for the day, here comes two pickers and grinners; a
happenstance is about to take place. Until just a few months ago
I never knew what a picker and grinner was, AAAARRRRGH what’s
this? OOOFFF lets have fun! So these two cats, Dick
Stanley and Bill Pension break out their
guitars and the picking and grinning begins, a happenstance is
underway. Before long here come other pickers and grinners;
Jesse Domaigue, Charlie Hartman,
Marvin Walston, the list goes on. The music is being
played by all these cats, professionals in their own fields, but
just have a love for music, well, with all this going on I just
can’t stay off the dance floor so I ask all the girls to dance.
It’s a great way to spend an afternoon dancing and listening to
the music, what could be more entertaining?
Now here is where I should have renamed this adventure,
Admiral Dingy does Toup’s Marina & Neptune’s Castle. If
you ever go to Toup’s Marina in Bridge
City on Cow Bayou, and I suggest you
do, if you’re looking for excellent Cajun Seafood, comfortable
surroundings, in a somewhat rustic atmo, don’t expect to find a
corporate type chain; it’s just not that kind of place.
Will Toup’s opened in 1973 as a fish market, brought his
own catch in from his boat to sell, and over the years it
evolved into the Bar and Restaurant that it is today, whoops
that is before Rita. He is rebuilding and open for business so
drop in and say Admiral Dingy sent you, they will
probably laugh at you and tell you his sail don’t go all the way
to the top. They say that because I’m not taking the big ship
around the world.
Speaking of Hurricane Rita, she was not so kind to
Neptune’s Castle, that’s my 62-foot sailing ship.
The only thing for me to do after chickening out on launching
the Cruise Ship Dingy to save the day and be
productive is to fix things that Rita broke. I went through
several repairs without any Dumb Dingy moves that made her
happy, now to make arrangements to take her out of the water and
find where she is taking on water. After that I will be free to
sail the world in her 9 foot 11 inch dinghy. Must say I’m
looking forward to that event.
Ship’s work is done for the
day, it’s Friday and I’m ready to go back to Toup’s Marina
to listen to the band and do some more dancing, I feel good
about the day’s events, got some work done, had fun, and now
it’s off to enjoy the night life on the waterfront. See you
there should you decide to drop by!
